Staying Motivated With P90X

It’s a question I get all the time…”Coach Dan, how do I stay motivated doing P90X?” It’s very common, you order P90X, you get very excited about it and you’re really into it for about 2-3 weeks and then…you hit a wall. This is when most people just quit altogether (heck, some people never even take P90X out of the box).

Let me first say that if you can just get through that first 30 days, for many people it just starts to become a habit, part of your every day routine. Personally, when I started P90X over two years ago, I simply told myself that absolutely nothing was going to stop me from getting through that first 90 days. I was so driven because I had reached a point where I was really unhappy about the way I looked and felt and I knew that I needed to change some things in my life if I wanted to be around long term.

If you’re having a hard time finding that drive to stay motivated, here’s a few tips I can give you to help with that.

Tip 1: Take some before pictures. See this page to find out how. If you don’t like the way you currently look, keep one of those before pictures in a place where you’ll see it every day. I made my before photo the background on my iPhone where I would see it many times a day. I hated the way I looked in that picture and it definitely reminded me why I started P90X in the first place and helped keep me in the game.

Tip 2: Get involved in the Team Beachbody community. If you don’t have an account, you can create a free one by clicking here.  Log into your account every day, log your workout in the SuperGym, and get involved in the message boards!  The message boards are full of people who are going through the same thing you are.  Find a thread of people who started around the same time you did and get involved in the conversation.  It really helps keep you accountable and helps keep you motivated knowing that you’re not the only one trying to do this.  Plus there is a ton of other great information, articles, videos, trainer tips and on and on.  If I’m your coach, I also have a private Facebook group where we can interact and keep each other accountable and motivated too.  You can click here to make me your coach, or if you already have a Team Beachbody account go to this page if you want to switch coaches.  Then go here to request to be added to my Facebook group.

Tip 3: Find a workout buddy.  Whether it’s your spouse, your boyfriend or girlfriend, a family member, a neighbor, a coworker…find someone to workout with who will keep you accountable.  Make sure it’s someone who is going to motivate you though, not someone who is going to drag you down.  Now this isn’t always possible for everyone.  I don’t have a workout partner and I’ve managed just fine.  But for some people, this can make all the difference.

P90X Motivation

Jim Rohn once said “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” That’s so true yet most people take better care of their car than their body which is really messed up. Hey, I was guilty of it myself for a number of years but I’ve made a change and I hope to help and inspire others to do the same.

I’ll end this with a couple videos that I like to watch from time to time.  This first one just reminds me of how blessed I am and how I really have no reason to complain or to find excuses not to work out and take care of my body.  Are you someone who comes up with a million excuses why you can’t exercise?  Then watch this…

And here’s Mr. P90X himself, Tony Horton, with a little pep talk…

If you enjoyed this post, give it a little Facebook, Twitter, or Google +1 love below…it would be much appreciated.

Cool article with some good ideas. I’ll be using the phone background idea. I just got my pull up bar installed and the wife and I kick of p90x Monday.

  2. Allie says:

    I like the videos.

Yeah I’ve been doing P90X for a while… I’m toward the end of week 10. I am somewhat stronger and leaner than I was a few months ago, and I’m not that far from the finish line. But I am really having a hard time staying motivated. (I haven’t lost any weight, which surprised me. And to most people I don’t look any different. Only the people who see me every day are noticing the difference. Since I was really out of shape, now I’m still out of shape, just not as bad as I was a few months ago!)

I really liked Tony’s pep talk though. Cuz I definately beat myself up about the results and if I skip a workout or whatever. But the 4 things that he said would happen are happening. Just gotta keep pushing play, like he said.

Hi Allie…usually when the results aren’t what you were expecting, and you’re giving it your all during the workouts, then the culprit is nutrition. Nutrition will account for about 80% of your results. Keep pushing play but take a look at your nutrition and see if it can be improved.

I am now on day 2 going into day 3 I work out in the mornings before I go to work. I am now getting ready for bed and I feel tore up from the floor up and I wanted to say thanks for the great ideas I am also going to use my before picture as a background on my phone and even though it hurts to move a little bit I am going to keep pushing play!

Is there any way u can give me some tips on the nutrition part??
And do u have to take the supplements to get the quickest results?

  5. Ewa says:

Im 50 years old ,was in good shape ,but not any more… just thinking maybe is too late for this?

    • Coach Dan says:

Hi Ewa…it’s absolutely NOT too late, not at all. I’ve seen many people your age and older get excellent results with P90X. I’m 43 myself so I’m no spring chicken either lol.

If you do decide to try it, purchase through one of the links on this page, and it will assign me as your free coach so I can help you out along the way. I also have a private Facebook group for the people I coach…there are currently almost 200 of us in the group helping each other out and keeping each other motivated.

Another Beachbody workout program you might want to consider is Les Mills Pump. I’ve added this program to my regimen and am really loving it and noticing great results. If you decide to try this one instead, I recommend getting the deluxe package so that you get the 3 bonus cardio workouts with it. One advantage that this program has is that it comes with all the equipment you’ll need whereas with P90X, there is some extra equipment you have to purchase like weights and a pull up bar.
